1.
What is Anonymous
FTP?
Anonymous
FTP is the ability to upload and/or download files from
a server without having a login username and password.
Obviously, for security reasons, we only allow anonymous
FTP to specific directories.
After
anonymous FTP is setup, it will create a directory called
$domain-anonftp in the user's home directory. This directory
will by default contain the following directories:
/bin
/dev
/etc
/lib
/pub
The
only directory that is used is the "pub" directory.
This is where the user should put files that they want
to have visitors anonymously download. Vistors can access
this directory via a browser by going to:
ftp://$domain.com/pub
Note,
we do not allow clients the ability to allow users to
both upload and download to the same directory. We do
this for security reasons. The client is responsible
for moving files from the incoming directory to the
pub directory if they wish for uploaded files to be
later downloaded. To get an incoming directory, contact
support.
The
incoming directory would be:
ftp://$domain.com/incoming
This
directory is writable from the web but NOT readable.
No one coming in from the web (or from an FTP program
logging in as "anonymous") can see what files
are stored here.
This
can be useful for resellers who want to allow their
clients to update their pages but don't want to give
them full FTP access. The clients would upload to ftp://$domain.com/incoming
and the reseller would move the files into /home/$user/$domain-www.
2. I am
uploading files but still see a white page?
If
our white "Welcome to domainname.com!" page,
index.html, has not been replaced by another index page,
then anyone going to domainname.com will still see the
white page instead of some other home page.
This
is the order in which the web server looks for a page
to put up as the "home" page:
default.htm
-> index.phtml -> index.pht -> index.cgi ->
index.shtml -> index.html -> welcome.cgi ->
welcome.html -> index.htm
Just
delete the index.html file and anything after it in
this list will then come up automatically. Notice that
"home.html" is NOT on the list and so will
not show up as your home page. You would need to rename
it.
